Two key projects for the construction of the national medical center at the Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University - Shanghai International Medical Science Innovation Center and Phase I of Zhongshan Hospital’s Qingpu New City branch, respectively, broke ground at the Zhongshan Hospital's Xuhui headquarter and in Qingpu on Monday.
The Zhongshan Hospital's national medical center, which was officially launched in November 2022, is the first comprehensive national medical center project in China. It is also a national key project during the 14th Five-Year Plan period and a major project for Shanghai.
The newly built Shanghai International Medical Innovation Center and the hospital’s Qingpu New City branch will become important carriers for the construction of the national medical center. The total construction area of the project is about 261,000 square meters, of which the Shanghai International Medical Innovation Center is about 89,600 square meters and Qingpu New City branch’s Phase I project is about 171,300 square meters.
The Shanghai International Medical Innovation Center includes a medical and engineering cross-cutting technology innovation center, a clinical diagnosis frontier technology innovation center, a major disease clinical medicine research center, a smart hospital research center, as well as a clinical trial service platform, a talent exchange and achievement transformation platform, and 500 research beds.
Once completed, it will focus on clinical medicine, biotechnology, medical engineering, artificial intelligence and other frontier fields, aiming at new medical equipment, new instruments, new materials, new vaccines, new drugs, new clinical diagnosis and treatment technologies, and build a top clinical research and innovation transformation base in China.
Located in the Yangtze River Delta Integrated Development Demonstration Zone, Zhongshan Hospital’s Qingpu New City Branch will help to improve the spatial layout and gradient configuration of medical resources in Shanghai. By widely applying 5G+AI technology to its functional buildings such as emergency center and outpatient building, it will develop into a world-class functional, humanized, and intelligent research-oriented hospital.
The Zhongshan Hospital said that two projects are scheduled to be officially put into use in 2026. The launch of these two projects will effectively promote the further high-quality development of the Zhongshan Hospital and contribute to the development of the biomedicine and health care industry in Shanghai.
