Shanghai volunteers answer the call for stem cell donations Release time:April 07,2024
On April 1 and 2, a total of sevenvolunteers in Shanghai donated stem cells. Among them, Zhu Weichao,a faculty memberof Shanghai BusinessandInformationCollegein Qingpu, donated stem cells to an 18-year-old acute leukemia patient inBeijingLu Daopei Hospital, becoming the 623rd donor in Shanghai and the 25th donor in Qingpu District.
On February 23, Zhu received the news of his successful initial matching with a patient. Due to the critical condition of the patient, an urgent procedure was initiated. In less than a week, Zhu completed high-resolution testing and a health examination. He met all the donation criteria and officially signed the donation agreement on March 26, immediately preparing for donation at the hospital.
On April 2, Zhu completed the donation and the collected stem cells were sent to Beijing on the same day for a stem cell transplant in the evening.
"This is anhonorable and meaningful act. This patient has just come of age, at the prime of youth. I hope he can overcome the illness and recover soon," Zhu said.
On April 1,fivevolunteers in Shanghai donated stem cells, and the following day,twomore donors completed their donations,creating a new record of daily and two-day donation volume in the city.
About180,000 volunteers from various professions in Shanghai have joined the Shanghai branch of the China Marrow Donor Program. As of now, Qingpu District hasregisteredover 5,470 volunteers for stem cell donation, with 25donations made, sending lifehopeto patients with blood diseases.
