The Agricultural Products Quality Safety Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs released the list of the first batch of nationally renowned agricultural products for 2024, which included Qingpu's Baihe strawberries and Chonggu lettuce.

Baihe Town is a major strawberry planting area in Shanghai. On average, one out of every three strawberries produced in Shanghai comes from Baihe Town. By the end of 2023, the total area of strawberries in Baihe Town was 6,362.4 mu, accounting for 21.6 percent of the town’s agricultural fields.

Baihe Town has been titled China's Strawberry Home and in 2018, Baihe strawberries were awarded the certificate of agricultural product geographical indication by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Currently, there are a total of eight companies and cooperatives authorized to use the geographical indication. In 2023, these eight cooperatives cultivated a total of 1,110.7 mu of strawberries. It is expected that the sales will reach 33.32 million yuan (US$4.6 million) by the end of this month's strawberry production.

The brand value of Baihe strawberries has exceeded 250 million yuan, with a steadily increasing influence.

In recent years, Chonggu Town has vigorously developed the green vegetable industry, focusing on improving the quality of lettuce and the cultivation and promotion of new varieties.

The area of lettuce planting is 1,164 mu, with a green certification rate of over 90 percent and an annual output of more than 10,000 tons. Lettuce has gradually become a symbolic characteristic agricultural product of Chonggu Town.

In 2021, Shanghai Chunchang Vegetable and Fruit Cooperative was established as an excellent lettuce demonstration base, undertaking the selection and demonstration work of new and superior varieties of lettuce. More than fifty excellent varieties of lettuce have been demonstrated and promoted in Chonggu Town.
