As boats in brilliant colors dashed out like arrows, supporters burst into deafening cheers. The 15th Shanghai International Chinese Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament is held on the waterways of Qingpu District from September 10 to 14, gathering athletes from across the globe for exhilarating races and cross-cultural exchanges.

The five-day event welcomed about 400 competitors of 20 teams from 14 countries and regions. Combining professional sports competition and cultural integration, the tournament has become a signature international sports and cultural gala in East China.

The opening ceremony was held at Shanghai Qingpu Loop Waterside Park on Sunday. A traditional dragon boat eye-dotting ritual was conducted, wishing all participants courage and triumph on the water.

The opening ceremony featured immersive traditional cultural performances. Powerful drum and martial arts dances demonstrated the grandeur of traditional Chinese sports culture, while elegant sword and dance show blended classic martial arts aesthetics with modern stage design, presenting unique oriental artistic charm for domestic and overseas audiences.

Professional and standardized competitions featured 200-meter and 400-meter straight sprint races for mixed 12-person dragon boat teams. On the rippling water, rowers paddled in perfect unison. Boats surged forward swiftly amid rhythmic chants, creating a dynamic scene of strength, speed and teamwork. After intense competition, teams from Argentina, France and Austria claimed the top three honors.

Launched in 2009, the Shanghai International Chinese Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament targets overseas Chinese participants. Over more than a decade of development, the event has evolved beyond athletic competition. It serves as vital cultural bond connecting global overseas Chinese communities and inheriting traditional Chinese culture, fostering cross-border friendship and shared cultural identity among Chinese people worldwide.

Parallel to the main tournament, the 2nd "Qinglong Tongzhou" Water Sports and Cultural Exchange Festival brought together nine teams from Taiwan and the Yangtze River Delta for friendly races.

Young participants visited local cultural landmarks including Songze Site Museum and Panlong Xintiandi, experiencing the profound Jiangnan cultural heritage. Interactive activities and Taiwan-themed markets further deepened cross-strait youth communication and cultural recognition.

Known as "China's hometown of Dragon Boat culture," Qingpu boasts profound folk traditions rooted in its dense river network. As a premium regional sports brand event, the tournament adheres to an integrated development concept of sports, culture, tourism and other industries.

During the event, customized cultural and tourism routes connected core landmarks, driving integrated tourism and sports consumption. A themed market with over 30 booths, including a dedicated Taiwan specialty zone, showcased agricultural products, intangible cultural heritage crafts and cross-strait characteristic goods, building a platform for folk economic and cultural exchanges.

Night cultural performances and intangible heritage exhibitions extended the consumption scenario, combining Jiangnan water town folk customs and cross-strait cultural elements to enrich people's nighttime cultural life.

Featuring united efforts and courageous progression, the grand dragon boat gathering unites overseas Chinese from all over the world and showcases Qingpu's urban charm and cultural vitality. Qingpu will further polish its dragon boat event brand, deepen multi-industry integration, gather global resources through sports exchanges, and inject new momentum into high-quality regional development.
